The Biggest Excavator: Yesterday And Today
Excavators by themselves are huge; just imagine then what the biggest excavator would look like. It would probably look like something out of a science fiction movie. When you try to draw a picture or get one of a real big excavator, you are sure to come across some of the true biggies in the excavator lineup. Some of these machines do not even exist today. For instance, the Big Muskie and the Silver Spade were exceptionally huge machines that could dig up practically a whole hillside, without so much as a whimper.
The days of these mammoths are long gone. Both these wonderful pieces of equipment (calling them equipment seems to undermine their incredible capacity to work) no longer exist today. After they put in a lot of work in different locations, they had to be just dismantled and scrapped. The Big Muskie had to be de-commissioned after a freak accident that involved the breaking off of one of its attachments that caused the front of the machine to come crashing down. Coming to the next biggest excavator of its time, the Silver Spade, attempts to repair the same had to be abandoned after the sad realization that repairing this gargantuan equipment would be a lot more expensive than having to manufacturing a similar one.
Most people who are in the construction industry feel that the biggest excavator (either the Big Muskie or the Silver Spade) did the nation proud by the work it carried out in its respective lifetimes. There was no point in holding on to the equipment, merely because of sentimental value. Innovative technologies and recent advancements in the construction industry have ensured that excavators can be made a lot more powerful and efficient than they were.
One living example of an efficient excavator that can also be referred to as the biggest excavator existing now is the one that is manufactured by Krupp. It is probably the biggest vehicle known to move on land and is owned by RWE AG. Weighing around 45,500 tons, this biggie can move mountains and hillsides with ease. To look at, it vaguely resembles a vehicle from a Spielberg movie, with quite a few arms and attachments that can work in perfect coordination to achieve quite a lot. Moving on sands and any other kind of surface is something that it does with great ease. With extra heavy duty parts and spares, this machine is indispensable in an area where soil or dirt has to be removed in huge quantities within a specified time. When all is said and done about the biggest excavator that has been invented or manufactured, it is necessary to remember that building one is not half as important as knowing how to operate it. Safety and protection regulations have to be in place in order to ensure that there are no mishaps of any kind.
